Grooving: A circumferential or angled groove is made into the rubber surface. Grooving is added for a variety of reasons, including spreading, gripping, mechanical clearance, surface contact reduction, fluid removal, heat dissipation, and more.

There are many other patterns of grooving used such as the Spiral, worm, chevron, etc.
